Years ago a freighter bound for Seattle from Yokohama lost a container overboard, filled with sneakers. They washed up all along the Pacific West Coast, from Alaska to Baja California. The sneakers didn’t carry a message, except to tell scientists about the speed and direction of ocean currents. Walking the flood lines at Big Sur, it would be a lot more exciting to find a Message-in-a-Bottle instead of a single sport-shoe of uncertain fit. Bottled messages have been known to travel half the globe, and have reputedly created lasting friendships and pen-pals.
